Leadership Succession Plan in Motion at Madigan Capital

Leadership Succession Plan in Motion at Madigan Capital

Real-estate debt investment firm, Madigan Capital has announced the retirement of its Executive Chairman and Founder, Michael Wood , activating the implementation of a planned leadership succession strategy.

Fellow Madigan Board Member and CC Real Managing Partner, Barry Brakey will now assume the role of Chair, while Chris Wilson continues as Chief Executive Officer, leading Madigan’s next generation of investment professionals to deliver high-quality investment outcomes for institutional clients.

A pioneer of Australia’s real estate debt investment management industry, Michael Wood established Madigan Capital in 2016 and developed it into a highly regarded institutional investment firm where a specialist team oversees ~$2 billion assets under management.

During his tenure, Michael played an advocacy role in advancing institutional acceptance of real estate debt, actively engaging with industry participants and regulators to support the maturation of the sector, including ASIC’s review of  Australia’s private debt market.

Reflecting on his decision, Michael said “the firm was well positioned to take on its next phase of growth”.

“While choosing to retire was a difficult decision, it has been an incredibly rewarding journey and I have full confidence it is the right time for Madigan’s leadership to transition as planned,” said Michael. “From the outset, our objective was to build a disciplined, resilient investment platform underpinned by a strong culture and highly-qualified team, and I am immensely proud of what we have achieved together,” said Mr Wood.

Incoming Chair, Barry Brakey states that Michael’s contribution to both Madigan Capital and the broader real estate debt sector are significant.

“Michael should be proud of his legacy at Madigan and for establishing real estate debt as a credible institutional asset class in Australia. When CC Real invested in Madigan in 2020, we were drawn to the strength of the platform built by Michael and his unwavering commitment to drive institutional integrity and disciplined portfolio construction,” said Mr Brakey.

The strategic leadership transition ensures Madigan Capital remains well‑supported and strongly positioned for long‑term growth under the leadership of CEO, Chris Wilson, who highlights Michael’s influence will endure.

“Michael has embedded disciplined underwriting and active loan asset management into Madigan’s DNA. With the depth of talent across our team, strong governance framework and a thoughtful investment culture, we are well positioned to leverage and expand on Michael’s legacy to grow and deliver superior outcomes for our clients,” said Mr Wilson.

For Michael, retirement is an opportunity to move from one important chapter to the next: “Building a firm from the ground-up in an emerging sector, like Australian real estate debt, requires your “all”.  Now that Madigan is on a firm foundation and in safe hands, I’m looking forward to spending more time with family, where grandparent duties are high on the agenda.”
